Expedition goes to the top and bottom of the world to promote awareness of global warming
Terramar supports mission of savethepoles.com
TARRYTOWN, New York (June 15, 2009)?Terramar has become a sponsor of the Save the Poles expedition, www.savethepoles.com, with its contribution of product to the team and donation of 1% of sales on its new Terra T, as well as ThermaTX2?, Thermawool? and X-Odor? products to this important mission.
Later this year, renowned Arctic explorer Eric Larsen will journey to both the North and South Poles and climb to the summit of Mt. Everest. The expedition?s objectives are, according to Larsen:
- To complete the first-ever expedition to Mt. Everest, the North Pole and South Pole in a continuous 365-day period
- To promote clean energy solutions, advocate strategies for reducing carbon emissions post Kyoto 2012 and collect relevant scientific data
- To produce a documentary film, book and educational CD-ROM that focuses on global warming, teamwork and the spirit of adventure
- To develop a post expedition multi-media lecture series
Eric and his team of explorers will also wear Terramar products based on the wear testing they performed this year. According to Larsen, the biggest problem the team has is heat and perspiration build up?even in these extremely cold conditions. Terramar base layers immediately move the moisture quickly from the body to the outside of the garment where it can quickly evaporate, keeping the wearer dry, warm and comfortable.
?This expedition will heighten awareness of how mankind is affecting the world?s ecosystems,? says Russ Pitman, vice president of sales and marketing for Terramar. ?Terramar is pleased to support Eric and Save the Poles.?
Eric Larsen will appear at Terramar?s booth #32051 at the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market Show on July 23, 2009 from 10 am until 12 pm.
Please also note: Retailers who stop by the booth with a plastic bottle, will also receive a free Terramar Terra-T made from 100% recycled micro polyester.
In addition to Save the Poles, Terramar is also a sponsor of the Outdoor Industries Women?s Coalition (www.oiwc.org).
Exerpt from Eric Larsen's journal
Ryan Waters stopped by today
to help divide up some of the group gear for our Denali Climb. He took the new
Sierra Designs Mountain Meteor tent, some Terramar long underwear
(definitely not group gear), LEKI poles and a few other odds and ends.
I like this part of expedition planning and preparation. Gearing up. Believe it
or not, I rarely make lists for my personal items. Food, logistics, route
planning - that's different and is carefully written and checked. But for
whatever reason, I seem to work the details of my own gear selection better in
my head.
After countless expeditions, I've developed a fairly basic routine: lay
everything out where I can see it and take a mental inventory. Two pairs Terramar
long underwear, SD soft shell, SD hard shell and pants, SD down
coat, Scarpa boots, LEKI trekking poles, Stanley Thermos, ACR Personal Locator
Beacon, Superfeet Insoles, Granite Gear back pack, MSR stove, snowshoes and
pots, Therm a Rest sleeping pad... It's all there to be carefully packed.
First, in duffels for the flight, then my all too familiar pack.
This is what I know. It?s nice to get lost in the quiet movements of assembling
gear and packing. But experience has also taught me that this will be the last
quiet moment I have in a long, long time.
On Sunday, I fly to Alaska.
Monday, drive to Talkeetna. Then a short flight to Base Camp on the glacier.
After that, its work. Even rest days can be work on an expedition. Don't get me
wrong, I love being on big expeditions and outside, but its important to
realize that it?s no vacation. More often than not, its just plain hard work.
Its work that I wouldn't trade for the world!
